The large samplers of the late 19th century are now valuable testaments to the expertise of young embroiderers of the time. Each piece tells a story of patient learning where letters, numbers, friezes, and decorative motifs were carefully assembled to demonstrate mastery of embroidery. Made in 1895, this magnificent sampler signed by Mademoiselle Desmaris stands out for its remarkable balance and harmonious composition.

Conceived from this antique piece and reissued by DMC and Création Point de Croix, this design faithfully reproduces the codes of traditional samplers. The alphabets are perfectly distributed, the borders delicately ordered, and the decorative motifs elegantly integrated into the whole. As in many old alphabet samplers, the letter W is absent, recalling the specificities of teaching and writing at that time.

The model was embroidered on DMC 11 count linen fabric, worked over 2 warp threads and 2 weft threads. This traditional support particularly highlights the richness of the details and respects the authentic spirit of works made at the end of the 19th century.

This design can also be made on 14 count Aida fabric to facilitate embroidery while maintaining similar dimensions. Whatever fabric is chosen, this piece retains all its delicacy and historical character.

The charts are printed with symbols and colors (DMC ref.) on 6 pages.

Design size: 266 stitches wide × 309 stitches high. Dimensions calculated for embroidery on 11 count linen fabric stitched over 2 warp threads and 2 weft threads, or on approximately 14 count Aida fabric: 48.4 × 56.2 cm.
